What to Expect at your First Acupuncture Appointment

New patients: We request that you arrive 20 minutes prior to your appointment time in order to complete the intake paperwork

On your first visit to Maplebrook Acupuncture Clinic, you will be asked to complete our short intake and health history forms or you may download the forms and bring them with you. We will then have a brief private consultation with you to go over your chief concerns and relevant health history.  This is a good time to address any questions you may have. We will then recommend a treatment plan, and needles will be inserted into specific points along pertinent meridians. The rest of your time will be spent relaxing in your recliner.

During your acupuncture treatment, it is common to experience any number of sensations, such as tingling or a sense of heaviness in the body, and a deep feeling of relaxation. Many patients fall asleep during their acupuncture treatment. Depending on your constitution and particular complaint, we will recommend a course of treatment that may require multiple visits. Acupuncture’s effectiveness is cumulative, and patience may be necessary, especially if dealing with a long-term, chronic condition.

Most acute conditions can be treated quicker. The frequency of visits may vary from 1 to 3 per week. Most people do not need 3 treatments a week, and if they do require that many it will generally be for a short period of 1-2 weeks. On subsequent visits, we will have a quick check in with you to see how you have been feeling since your last treatment to monitor your progress before inserting your needles.

How do I Prepare for My Acupuncture Treatment?

Please read and complete the New Patient Forms and bring them with you.

  • Wear loose, comfortable clothing that allows for easy access to lower arms and legs.
  • You may choose to bring a light blanket or throw to put over you.
  • It’s best to have something light to eat 30 minutes or so before your treatment, avoid being too hungry or too full during your treatment
  •  Avoid caffeine at least 1 hour prior to your appointment.
  • Please do not wear any perfumes or scented products within the clinic. Many patients, especially those with allergies, pregnant women, and people undergoing chemotherapy or radiation, are very sensitive to fragrances.
  • Quiet is greatly appreciated in the clinic. Please silence cell phones and speak softly.  You may bring an MP3 player with a headset if you keep the volume low. A peaceful atmosphere will enhance your relaxation and the relaxation of others.
